Together they bring one of the biggest dubacts in the UK to the Melkweg: Mungo's Hi Fi from Scotland. For this special occasion they will play on the mighty King Shiloh soundsystem.

Just read on Dancehall mobi that Risto Benji is murdered, he was reportedly shot dead last night by a gunman in an area known as “Vietnam” in Church Pen, St. Catherine.
Sad news. Risto entered the music business as a child when he was part of the Jammy's posse, deejaying on the sound and recording hits like 'Gimme the money' on the Punanny riddim. His biggest hit is probably 'Passport buddy'.

March 26th was a historical night for the European soundclash scene. The first lock off in European soundclash was a fact. LP International humiliated One Love Hi Powa, who didnt have to play back after the fourth round. The best round of the night was LP's victory round, in which they played some of their most legendary dubs like D Brown, Garnett Silk and their famous Biggie Smalls dub. You can get the audio here.

My favorite book on reggae is probably Beth Lesser's book about King Jammy. Her new book tells the story of the iconic artist/sound man Sugar Minott. Essential reading material!

I’m super inspired by reggae music, been a part of me since I was born, and I grew up listening to it. I grew up loving it… I live that culture. I never get tired of it. I can listen to reggae music all day long, and it was exciting for me to do a song like this, especially with the lyrics being like that.

I just received an e-mail from DJ Fly T from Scotland. His group Capitol 1212 released a digital EP in october with the appealing title 'Invade the carnival'. For this EP they worked with the legend Tenor Fly. Tenor Fly drops some serious sound killing lyrics on the tune Don Man Sound, which comes in four mixes, including one by our favorite wedding DJ, J-Star (photo below).
The digital version is available on the better download sites and the tune is now also released on limited edition vinyl. The 7" has the two mixes by Capitol 1212 on it.

In November 1982, five boys aged 11 to 15, hailing from Birmingham, England by way of Jamaica, shot up the worldwide pop charts with an irresistible reggae single called, Pass the Dutchie. The world was theirs to conquer.
By 1994, one member was dead, another in a mental institution and a third was lost to the seedy Birmingham underworld. For music fans, there's further tragedy - the boys were actually artists, not just cute kids singing pre-packaged songs. All five were talented musicians who wrote much of their own music. Had they been nurtured properly, Musical Youth could have shed their boy band/novelty label and become full-fledged stars.
Watch Unsung as the survivors tell their story, including two active former members - singer Dennis Seaton and keyboardist Michael Grant - along with the first interview that former guitar player Kelvin Grant - fiercely at odds with Seaton and with his own brother - has given in 15 years. "Two types of people get ripped off in the music industry,’ Michael Grant says. “Kids and black people. We were both."

At this year's Rastaplas festival SoundSystemCulture® is proud to present to you a Dubplate Showcase with two sounds that have been cutting dubs for years:

Winnieman Sound (Rotterdam) & Jahva Sound (The Hague).

In two rounds of 15 minutes, these sounds will try to prove to you they are the better sound. After their rounds they will play a Dub-fe-Dub in wich they will go deep into their dubboxes to pick the best tune for the moment. If you are interested in Soundsystem Culture, this is something you can’t miss!

Here some background info on dubplates and soundclash:
As long as soundsytems have been around, there has been rivalry in the soundsystem culture. From the days of 'Sir' Coxsone Dodd an Duke Reid, Soundsystems have been competing for the 'Champion' title. In the beginning every sound had artists that were loyal to their sound and during their live performances they 'killed' the next sound with their sharp lyrics.
As the soundsystem culture grew bigger and bigger, dubplates became more familiar. A dubplate used to be a one away tune in wich an artist would sing about a soundsystem and how it was bigger and better than any soundsystem out there. The dubplate business soon grew bigger and bigger. There was always a sound that wanted to prove it could cut the better, more original version of a tune. And there was always artists looking to get some more exposure or just wanting to make some money. The way a sound cuts its dubplates shows the sounds originality and creativity. Sounds either adapt the lyrics or the riddim for the tune wich makes it special. When you listen to sounds like Killamanjaro or Stone Love you will hear them play special versions of regular tunes for wich they are known as a sound.
Nowadays the Dubplate business is a big business and all over the world sounds are trying to get their hands on that special riddim to voice that one artist just to make sure no sound plays the tune the way they do. These dubplates are used in soundclashes to determine wich sound plays the better dubplates and therefore is the bigger sound.
Soundclashes are much like rap battles, the crowd is always the judge and the jury. But in a soundclash the dubplates are used to ‘diss’ the opponent. The soundsystem’s MC uses speech to compliment the dubplates and give them some extra ‘sting’.
